When I started watching films made of art and beauty, the first film I watched was Debi, right when I was in class 5.

With days working into textile, I ended up making a saree as a tribute to Ray himself. In a world racing toward fast fashion, we pause—deliberately—to tell a story woven with threads of culture, identity, and rebellion. Jolphoring breathes art and brings to you the best range of handloom sarees that tells story and talks about your nostalgia.

Debi saree is a pure handloom saree born from my deep love for cinematic heritage and artisanal craftsmanship. Inspired by Satyajit Ray’s timeless film Debi, this saree is not just clothing—it’s a canvas of cultural memory and female divinity.
This saree was entirely made from scratch. The fabric was handwoven by skilled artisans using traditional looms in Bengal.

What makes it special? The “Debi” motif—carved by hand on wood blocks by our beloved Zakir da, then meticulously block-printed by Raju da bringing the goddess to life in every drape.

This saree bears not just the name “Debi” in Bengali script, but also the spirit of the divine feminine. It evokes the silent strength and sacred rebellion of Doyamoyee, the protagonist of Ray’s film, who becomes a reluctant goddess in the eyes of a patriarchal society. Be it Durga puja saree or Kali puja saree or for any festive occasion, its a perfect fit for all. The white saree with red amrapali border is a tradition for every Bengali to drape.

Lets come to the interesting part. Beauty doesn’t need to break the bank. We believe ethical fashion should be accessible and this is one of the handloom sarees under ₹2000.

Debi is now available through our website, making it easy for conscious consumers to own a piece of living heritage. It is a pure handloom sarees with purpose. Each piece supports traditional weaving communities and revives forgotten craft forms. It is Block-printed with hand-carved wood stamps and no digital prints have been used. The material is 100% breathable, eco-friendly handwoven saree cotton. I kept the color palette as a Classic red on white with earthy golden borders—symbolic of purity, power, and heritage.
